About the Product
Philips, the leader in portable defibrillation technology, designed the Philips HeartStart FRx Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) specifically for the non-medical lay-person, making it one of the easiest devices to operate, even for those with little or no medical training. The Philips HeartStart FRx AED is very dependable defibrillator. It was designed to work in harsh conditions and rugged terrrain areas where a more durable defibrillator is needed. And every Philips HeartStart FRx goes through a 120 point inspection test before it reaches the market. These tests include water testing, quarter ton weight testing, and high impact concrete collision testing. It can withstand being dropped without breaking. Designed to operate in more adventurous, hard to reach places, which involve the elements, the HeartStart FRx will out perform when compared to it's competitors. Clinical tests have proven this. The Philips HeartStart FRx is great for airplanes, cruise ships, resorts, amusement parks, vacation spots, hotels, ski resorts, skating rinks, sports complexes, pools, lakes, beaches, country clubs, night clubs, event halls, fitness centers, camps and hard to reach areas where having the Philips HeartStart FRx could mean life or death in emergency situations like sudden cardiac arrest.
Another feature of the Philips HeartStart FRx Automatic External Defibrillator is that it uses the same set of defibrillation pads, called SMART Pads !!, for adults, children, and infants. This is because the Philips FRx AED uses a special key called an infant child key which switchs the defibrillator to infant child mode when the key is inserted into the defibrillator. When the key is inserted, the AED will light up areas where the SMART Pads are to be placed on the infant or child patient. The amount of electricity that is used per shock for infants and children is reduced to about one-third of the normal amount used for adults. The Philips HeartStart FRx AED will then walk the rescuer through CPR instructions designed for infants and children. This setting is recommended for children under fifty-five pounds or under eight years old. The infant child key is a unique feature which makes the Philips HeartStart FRx AED ideal for schools, childcare faciilities, boys and gilrls clubs, the YMCA and YWCA, camps, and other places where infants and children as well as adults attend. Plus, there is a monetary savings since only one set of SMART pads 11 are needed.
The Philips HeartStart FRx Automatic External Defibrillator delivers vital CPR coaching which can help guide even those trained in CPR, although it is designed for those who have no training at all. Deliberate, clear, concise voice instructions are given which walk the rescuer through CPR while preparing them for each chest compression. The coaching even times breaths to assist the rescuer in providing timely compressions and breaths. An orange light advises when a proper time to shock is. Other lights signify readiness and caution, and there is a quick reference guide available at the push of a button.
Small and light weight, the Philips HeartStart Frx Automatic External Defibrillator can be easily carried to a patient's side and operated by one rescue person.
This Philips HeartStart FRx Automatic External Defibrillator delivers a highly effective defibrillation shock that is also gentle to the heart. This is because the HeartStart FRx AED uses SMART Biphasic technology which is the patented waveform which allows a highly effective defibrillation shock to be delievered which is also gentle to the heart. Biphasic technology is an impedance-compensating, low energy (<200 Jules), low capacitance (100 μF), biphasic truncated exponential (BTE) waveform that delivers a fixed energy of 150 Jules (for adults) for defibrillation. Different waveforms have different dosage requirements, similar to a dosage associated with a medication. “If energy and current are too low, the shock will not terminate the arrhythmia; if energy and current are too high, myocardial damage may result.” (I-63)5 The impedance compensation used in the SMART Biphasic waveform results in an effective waveform for all patients. The SMART Biphasic waveform has been demonstrated to be just as effective or superior for defibrillating VF (ventricular fibrillation) when compared to other waveforms and escalating higher energy protocols.Because of Philips' intuitive innnovations for treating Sudden Cardiac Arrest, the Philips HeartStart FRx Automatic External Defibrillator is one of the top of the line defibrillations. No other Manufactuere has published more clinical data in external defibrilllation therapy.
Why get the Philips HeartStart FRx Automatic External Defibrillator?
Consider the other essential safety equipment you own to protect your loved ones in case of an emergency, like smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, flashlights, and first-aid kits. These devices are there to protect you. The Philips HeartStart FRx AED is also a protection device. You buy one for peace of mind, hoping never to have the need to use it. Studies have found that victims suffering from sudden cardiac arrest have a greater chance of survival if they receive CPR and a defibrillation shock within seconds or a few minutes of having SCA. For every minutes that passes, a victim's chance of survival decreases. And normally it takes the EMS department between 9 and 15 minutes to arrive at a scene. Often they arrive too late and since every minute counts for a person to be saved, having a Philips HeartStart FRx AED onsite will greatly improve their chances for survival.
How do I use the Philips HeartStart Defibrillator?
If you suspect that someone is in sudden cardiac arrest (i.e. they are not breathing normally, they are unconscious, and you cannot wake the person) CALL 911.
Then PULL the cartridge handle- - it's marked "PULL" in large letters initiating the clear calm voice that will guide you through the process.
Next, PLACE THE PADS on the patient's bare chest and follow the voice instructions. They will tell you exactly what to do. The Philips HeartStart FRx Automatic External Defibrillator can even sense and adapt to your actions. If you are moving quickly, the voice prompts stay with you. If you are taking too much time, the Philips HeartStart FRX AED provides increasingly detailed instructions to help you place the pads. Once the HeartStart FRx senses that the pads have been applied to the skin, it automatically begins analyzing the patient's heart rhythm. The Philips FRx Automatic External Defibrillator decides whether a shock is needed--you don't have to.
Lastly, PRESS the shock button. If the Philips HeartStart FRx Defibrillator decides a shock is needed, it will instruct you to press the flashing orange button. The Philips HeartStart FRx AED is designed to only let you deliver a shock if it determines one is needed. And it will provide CPR coaching too!
It's that easy. You can feel confident with Philips as the automatic external defibrillator is providing easy-to-follow, straightforward direction and coaching.
What happens when the Emergency Medical Service's Arrive?
Once the EMS team arrives, transitioning from the Philips HeartStart FRx Automated External Defibrillator to the EMS' defibrillator is easy. There is no need to remove the Philips HeartStart FRx's SMART pads and replace them with the EMS' pads. An adapter will allow the Philips FRx's SMART Pads to work with the EMS" Automated External Defibrillator. Just attach the adapter to the FRx SMART pads and plug them into the EMS' AED and it will respond.
How will I know if the Philips HeartStart FRx AED is working?
Between uses, the Philips HeartStart FRx Auotmated External Defibrllator performs daily, weekly, and monthly self-tests of its electrical components, subsystems, and battery to help ensure continued reliability and readiness. A pads integrity test, which checks daily that the cartridge is properly installed and that the defibrillator pads are in working order provide an additional level of assurance. As long as the green Ready light on the defibrillator is blinking, the Philips HeartStart FRx AED is ready for use. If any part of the defibrillator needs attention, the READY light turns off and the defibrillator chirps. Just like the battery in your smoke alarm. By pressing the flashing blue Information button, verbal guidance of what is wrong with the AED is given to help identify and correct the situation.
